branches."
Redman grew up in San Francisco,
son of legendary saxophonist Dewey
Redman and a Russian-Jewish dancer.
He graduated at the top of his high
school class and summa cum laude
from Harvard. He was accepted to Yale
Law School but took some time off in
Brooklyn, N.Y., where he grew serious
about jazz and quickly established a
blossoming musical career.
Artistic director of the SFJAZZ
Festival, Redman also is the founder,
artistic director and saxophonist of the
SFJAZZ Collective, an all-star resident
jazz ensemble composed of artists
representing many generations, styles
and cultures. The West Coast answer to
the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the
ensemble explores the last 50 years of
jazz repertoire through new composi-
tidns written by band members and
new arrangements of great works from
modern jazz history.
The eight-piece collective has been
known to practice in a sound-proof
second-floor room at the Jewish
Community Center of San Francisco,
whose Kanbar Hall is a showcase for live
music and theater.
Making its University Musical Society

debut, the SFJAZZ Collective plays a
tribute to Herbie Hancock, with perfor-
mances of his works juxtaposed against
new pieces composed by each member
of the collective, 8 p.m. Friday, March
31, at the Michigan Theater in Ann
Arbor. $18-$40. (734) 764-2538 or www.

Come To Dinner

Theater lovers witnessed the talent of
Jewish playwright Donald Margulies in
the recently staged Brooklyn Boy at
Jewish Ensemble Theatre.
His play Collected Stories, about a
Jewish writer who is betrayed by her
young disciple, was nominated for a
Pulitzer Prize.
That honor would come to Margulies,
who teaches playwriting at the Yale
School of Drama, in 2000, when his
play Dinner
With Friends
won the Pulitzer
Prize for Drama.
Underneath the
work's humor-
ous moments lie
its more serious
themes: commit- Donald Margulies
ment, fidelity, love
and the very meaning of relationships.
Dinner With Friends will be staged
March 31-April 16 by Stagecrafters at
the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak. Show
times are 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays
and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $14-$16.
