"We've seen a lot of TVs popped
into closet spaces, too',' Frankel said.
Lefton once had a request for a
closet that would also hold a washer
and dryer. And the small refrigerator
is a hot-ticket item.
Outside of the bedroom, pantries
are a top revamping choice, as are
laundry rooms, whose closets may
hold dividers for wrapping paper and
hooks for kids' coats.
In the bathroom, freestanding clos-
ets can be created where there was
none.
Customers concerned about having
installers in their homes for weeks
on end will be pleased to learn the
process is quick. Some contractors,
like Lefton, aim for two visits: one for
measuring and design — including
drawing up a plan right on the spot
— and one to install.
"Everything is built in our shop, so
sometimes we can be in and out in
half an hour:' she said. "We never take
more than a day unless we're doing
new construction, which may take up
to two or three days."

Hoffman calculates that "a typical
8x8 melamine closet system would
take three to four hours" to install.
"Since most of our jobs are multi-
room in nature [working primarily
on new home construction], we're
typically at a job for one to two days."
He begins by offering complete color
computer-aided design that he says
allows "customers to actually see their
closet system prior to installation!'
Cost for custom closets varies,
based on the amount of work and
space. "Everything is sold by the foot:'
Lefton said. "The most economi-
cal, clean look is standard white, but
wood-grain finishes are popular now."
No matter what work you have
done, Lefton reminds, "it is very
important to make sure who you hire
is insured!'
As long as there is clutter, there will
be a need for someone to straighten it
up. "There's no end to organizing:' said
Bass. "Nowadays people are looking
to get the most room out of the space
they have."
Lefton added, "If they do it once,
they'll never settle for just a rod and a
shelf again." ❑
