Coaching can take place individually . or in groups, in person, by phone or online. Most insurance plans do not cover life coaching per se, although this can vary if the coach is also a cer- tifiedpsychotherapist and the client has appropriate coverage. Don't Fool Yourself Improving time management and productivity, at home and at work, is a common goal in life coaching, and coaches use a variety of methods to help their clients accomplish this. One popular tool is the Mission Control system, a life- and time-management program designed to increase produc- tivity and reduce the stress caused by today's information overload. Jeff Kaplan, one of approximately 16 licensed Mission Control partners worldwide, begins a two-day seminar by having participants make a list of "everything they have to do and handle ranging from everyday tasks like paying bills and driving the kids to soccer practice, to planning an upcom- ing bar mitzvah or family vacation. "The first thing you have to realize is that you're never going to get it all done, no matter how long you live says Kaplan, a partner in Essential rr, an information technology and productivity training company based in Dearborn. "If you think otherwise, you're fooling yourself." Mission Control provides a struc- ture for recording tasks, establishing priorities and using an accomplish- ment-based calendar to ensure timely completion. "What was really different about this system was that it focused on the psychology of getting things done, not just the efficiency:' says Stu Silberman, IT Manager at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn and a Mission Control graduate. "I definitely sleep better at night." Kaplan says most people are unreal- istic about time. "They allow an hour for something that actually takes an hour-and-a-half or even longer, and then they wonder why they're always running behind:' he says. "Our goal is to have productivity skyrocket and stress drop like a stone." Bob Iwrey, owner of McNichols Conveyor of Southfield, says, "The more I use it, the better things go. I'm having the best year I've had in a long time. I couldn't imagine doing things the way I used to." Among the roster of Mission Control graduates are such local Jewish communal leaders as Rabbi E. B. "Bunny" Freedman of the Oakland County-based Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Program and Allan Gale, associ- ate director of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit. "What I Rabbi Freedman found most helpful was the idea of using a `capture tool' to keep track of every responsibility:' says Rabbi Freedman. "Once something is recorded, I know it won't get lost. My life is still far from placid, but now I feel significantly more in control?" • No matter what form it takes, the, concept of coaching is not just for ath- letes. According to Hirsch, life coach- ing clients are enjoying healthier rela- tionships, improved time management and organization, more energy and clearer direction, and better integra- tion between beliefs and actions. "I always felt like I should be able to manage these things by myself; now - I wish I had done this sooner:' says Kathy B. "Everyone can use a good coach." ❑ .
