n addition to her daily class
schedule at Pardes Institute of .
Jewish Studies in Jerusalem,
Ariella Goldfein spent last week par-
ticipating in a learn-a-thon. Pledges
were made for each hour she learned
•
beyond the normal school day.
A University of Michigan gradu-
ate, Ariella helped organize the entire
school in the project, with participants
collecting donations for Mavoi Saturn,
a social justice organization provid-
ing assistance and support to Israel
women who cannot obtain divorce
contracts from their husbands. Ariella
raised $650 for the agency that has
helped hundreds of women, including
•those whose husbands are missing or
who deny them a legal divorce. Her
classmates' total donation amount has
not yet been calculated.

Why are some Israeli
women unable to obtain a
divorce?

"All marriages and divorces in Israel
are carried out under the authority of
Halachah (Jewish law), which states
a married couple is able to divorce
only when the husband grants the
divorce out of his own free will, and
his wife accepts it from him. As an
unfortunate result, many women are

denied a get (divorce contract) from
their husbands and are forced to
remain legally part of an often damag-
ing, unhealthy marriage, sometimes
for years, unable to re-marry (or
have children without serious hala-
chic and social repercussions). These
women often find themselves being
blackmailed or tortured by their recal-
citrant husbands in order to be freed
from their marriage."

Why did you choose to
donate to Mavoi Saturn?

"They do incredible amounts of work,
from political advocacy to personal
aid to women in these circumstances.
I heard two women spseak who used
their services. One of them is still not
divorced and has been waiting for a
year and a half, which comparatively,
is a short amount of time."

What else are you doing
to help?

"I completed a two-month volunteer
course certifying me as a lecturer on
the topic, allowing me to go around
Israel and lecture to English-speakers
promoting awareness and advocacy."
