of my relatives, whose picture is on the tal-
lit, is Rabbi Moses Safer," Lauren said of the
1700s Talmudic scholar, author and once
chief rabbi of Pressburg (now Bratislava).
She also took it on the recent Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Family
Miracle Mission to Israel, participating
with her parents, brother, Michael, 17, the
Rosenfelds and her dad's brother's family.
"We showed it to somebody on the way
there and the next thing we knew it was
being passed around the plane," Rosenfeld
said.
The tallit was a big hit in Florida. "I
worked on it so much when we were there
last winter that this year, when we went
back, everyone asked if I brought it with
me," Rosenfeld said. "Finally, I had my
daughter mail it to me so I could show
them."

Lauren said, "I am so happy my grand-
ma did this for me. We are really close and
the time she spent working on this shows
how much she loves me."
Rosenfeld said friends have suggested
incorporating the tallit into Lauren's chup-
pah when she gets married or even placing
it in a museum. "But Lauren told me she is
planning to continue working on it, adding
pictures of her husband, children and
grandchildren someday," Rosenfeld said. "It
means so much to her now, but I know as
she gets older the meaning will be even
greater."
Rosenfeld said making the tallit for
Lauren was "worth it because she is my
granddaughter and this was a very special
occasion for her." But, she added with relief,
"I won't be doing it again. It's too feminine
for boys — and I have no more grand-
daughters."
