NOUVEAUTE

When you're writing thank-you
notes in mass quantity, Sherman
says you can start with a general
theme. But you will need variations
on the theme.
Thank-you notes should be
mailed within six weeks for most
gifts, Sherman says, though baby
and wedding presents deserve a
longer grace period. (Newly mar-
ried couples may have hundreds of
letters to write, while new parents
are just downright exhausted most
of the time.) But under no circum-
stances should a thank-you note
arrive really late; "a year': Sherman
says, "is way too long?'
Sherman is the mother of young
children, who early on are learning
their manners. Her 2-year-old gets
a gift and draws a little something

as a thank you. School-age children
able to write at all can, with
parental supervision, come up with
their own notes.
Though Sherman says thank-you
notes are not necessary for a dinner
with friends (bring flowers or a
small gift, and follow up with a call
after the event), or even for espe-
cially thoughtful actions, there is
rarely a time they are not appreciat-
ed.
"I will never forget a note I got,
and it wasn't even for a gift. It was
just being there for someone, and I
never expected it," she says.
The letter thanked Sherman for
her "advice and love when I really
needed it." That someone took the
time to write for simply that, she
says, made her day.
