Answering Jihad's Call

Talk about self-denial.
Hamas has an intriguing take on the art of negotiation.
"There will be no concessions:' Mashal told TV viewers,
because they would disrupt the needs of the Palestinian
people. Concessions, he said, would encourage Israel to act
unrealistically. "When Israel feels that it can maintain its
security and its interests while continuing the occupation,
why shouldn't it have both?" he asked.
Mashal added, "Realism means insisting upon putting an
end to the occupation, liberating the land and gaining sover-
eignty before talking about a state."
Last year, Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza and parts
of the West Bank because the Sharon government felt that
it was the right thing to do, not because it got anything in
exchange.
Mashal is crystal clear about his take . on what Israel must
do to spur lasting peace:
• withdraw from Palestinian lands occupied in 1967,
including Jerusalem;
• accept the right of the Palestinian refugees and displaced
people to return to their lands and property;
• dismantle the settlements;
• remove the separation wall;
. • release all prisoners and detainees.
"Then we will be ready to take a serious step that will lead
us to true peace Mashal pronounced. "That's realism."
Talk about non-starters. Who is the warmonger?

In your heart, do you feel that Hamas
will somehow change?

What does Hamas leadership mean
for Palestinian statehood?

m

Israel must never abandon nor divide its eternal capital.
The so-called "right of return" would allow Arabs to outnum-
ber Jews in Israel. Some West Bank settlements not-only are-
too developed to dismantle, but also provide strategic security
buffers. The security barrier is a deterrent to Palestinian ter-
rorism. And many of Israel's prisoners are Arab terrorists.
If met, Hamas' demands would obliterate the Jewish state
without a shot being fired or any legitimate negotiation. This
is why I am so pessimistic and uncertain about the pending
Hamas-led government within the Palestinian Authority. ❑

POI NTS TO PONDE R.

A

fter Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elec-
tions on Jan. 25, the terrorist organization posted
old video messages from attack-bound suicide
bombers on its Web site. That's a strong rebuke of the civi-
lized world.
The messages, translated by the Jerusalem-based
tch, are stunning. They reinforce why
Hamas, despite being democratically
elected, cannot be trusted and why
Israel remains in grave danger.
Before attacking on Dec. 7, 2004,
Hamas recruit Adham Ahmad Hujyla
Abu Jandal declared by video, "We
are a nation that drinks blood, and
we know that there is no blood bet-
ter than the blood of Jews. We will
not leave you alone until we have
quenched our thirst with your blood,
and our children's thirst with your
blood."
If you thought that Hamas, the Islamic Resistance
Movement, would change its stripes after its upset triumph
at the polls, consider that it chose to post that message after
this year's election. No wonder the European Union sees the
hypocrisy. It threatened to halt aid to a Hamas-led govern-
ment until Hamas recognizes Israel, renounces violence and
honors all agreements between the Palestinian Authority and
the Jewish state.
Abu Jandal closed his video by saying: "We will
not leave until you leave the Muslim countries..." I
interpret that to mean Israel must be destroyed and
its land must fall under Muslim rule to keep with
llamas' Covenant. That covenant ties Zionism to
the root of evil in the Middle East. It calls on Arab
lands around Israel to join the jihad against Zionism.
Muslims apply that Arabic term to any armed strug-
gle in defense of Islam.
Another bomber, Mumin Rajab Rajab Abu Hafs,
attacked the same day as Abu Jandal. On his video,
Abu Hafs described his shahid, his "death for Allah:'
as a weddinglihad is the only way to liberate Palestine —
all of Palestine — from the impurity of the Jews ...," he said.
In a third video, bomber Bassem Al Takrouri said before
attacking on May 17, 2003: "Angels of mercy, escort our souls
to Heaven after we fulfill this duty of crushing the descen
dants of monkeys and pigs ... Escort me to the Maidens of
Paradise as a martyr."
Just last week, according to the Washington-based Middle
East Media Research Institute, Hamas leader Khaled Mashal
said on Arab TV that if Jews want Middle East peace, "let
them acknowledge the rights of the Palestinian people and
get out of our land."
"There can be no peace or stability along with occupation
and aggression:' he said.
So there will be no peace: Israel isn't about to vacate the
West Bank nor cede control of its land to the Palestinians.
Thus jihad, and its barbarism, will continue.
Hamas seems oblivious to world pressure against its outra-
geous claim denying Israel's United Nations-granted right to
exist. Said Mashal: "When the international community sees
that we are resolute in our position, it will respect this posi-
tion."
