A
llan Tushman of West
Bloomfield has won a spot on
the 55-member ARZA delega-
tion to the World Zionist Congress in
Israel in mid-June. He is the only local
candidate on any slate to win a seat.
The first-time delegate is the national
secretary of ARZA, the Association of
Reform Zionists of America, the Zionist
arm of the North American Reform
movement. He was No. 30 on the slate
and learned of his victory when it was
announced at the American Zionist
Movement's New York office.
"I was very excited when I found out','
Tushman said from Israel, where he was
among 100 leaders attending a Union
of Reform Judaism (URJ) conference."I
was in the conference room there, along
with a couple of members representing
each of the 12 slates."
Tushman, who belongs to Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield, is president of
Northeast Lakes Council of the URJ.
With 55 delegates, ARZA won the
most delegates, slightly more than 38
percent of the seats. In the last WZC
election held four years ago, ARZA won
61 seats, but some of those delegates
belonged to the Jewish Reconstructionist
Federation, which shared its slate. This
New Zimriyah! 2006
On Sunday, March 19, more than 200
children will come together in concert
when Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education hosts the New Zimriyah!
2006 — a community-wide musical
program featuring Jewish youth choirs
from Metro Detroit congregations. The
Kidz Klez Band of Michigan, under the
direction of Cantor Stephen Dubov, will
perform.
With the theme,"Je\vs Around the
World.," the New Zimriyah! 2006 will
be held at 2 p.m. at Temple Israel, 5725
Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield.
Admission is free and light refreshments
will be served (dietary laws observed).

Congregations participating in
the program include Adat Shalom
Synagogue, Congregations Beth Shalom,
B'nai Moshe, Chaye Olam, Shaarey
Zedek, Shir Tikvah and Temples Beth
El, Emanu-El, Israel, Kol Ami and Shir
Shalom.
year, the Reconstructionists had their
own slate.
In this election, the Religious Zionists
took second place with 35 delegates
or 24 percent. Dropping to third place
was Mercaz USA, representing the
Conservative movement, which took 32
seats or 22 percent.
The 145 delegates to the WZC, who
represent diaspora Jewry, vote on issues
that have an impact on Israel.
"My feeling is that ARZNs major
victory, with 20 more seats than the
second place party,
clearly shows
that the values of
Reform Judaism
are important to
a large plural-
ity of Jews in the
United States who
are engaged with
Tushman
Israel;' Tushman
said.
"The Reform victory is for those
of us who want to help shape Israel's
agenda and see an Israel where such
things as non-Orthodox marriages are
recognized, non-Orthodox conversions
are legitimate and that non-Orthodox
rabbis can perform these ceremonies.
These are things we will be fighting for
in June."
Sponsored by Federation's Alliance
for Jewish Education and the Michigan
Board of Cantors, this event is made
possible through the generosity of Elaine
and Michael Serling and the late Muriel
Jacknow. Call Judy Lewis, (248) 642-
