Cantor Greenbaum
healing after fall.

C

antor Sam Greenbaum's
doctors have compared
his March 2 injuries
— leading to five hours of surgery
on his left leg and elbow — to
those suffered in a skiing accident,
but the Congregation Beth Shalom
cantor admits, "I just fell bringing
in the recycling bin. I took one step
out of the garage onto the driveway.
It lookeds like it was covered with
water, but it
was solid ice
and I slipped
and flew into
the air."
\\Then he
couldn't stand
up — even
following
repeated
Cantor Greenbaum
attempts to
0 Grab the door
handle of his son-in-law's SUV —
an ambulance took him to Huron
Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce.
"As soon as they saw the break
in my leg, they told me there were
only a few specialists who could
treat it and I was transferred to
University of Michigan Hospital,"
he said.
An injury the cantor called "a
slight break" in his elbow also was
repaired surgically.
Just one day after the surgeries,
Cantor Greenbaum was up and
walking. Physical therapy begun in
the hospital will be continued on an
outpatient basis after he goes home
early next week.
Even while hospitalized, the can-
tor plans to continue his Oak Park
synagogue responsibilities. "I'm
ready right now to start listening
to b'nai mitzvah students over the
phone:' he said. "There may, even be
a carpool coming to the hospital
for lessons."
Not tasted and able to sit, the can-
tor said,"Once I'm home, I can start
having someone drop me off at shul
and I can do my work sitting down."
In the meantime, he said,"Others
at Beth Shalom have been covering
for me. The support systems there
— and in the entire Jewish commu-
nity — have been wonderful." Li
