Esther Unveiled

Donald Fagen, best known as the vocalizing
half of the rock band Steely Dan, turned 58
years old in January. Out with a new CD,
Morph the Cat, it is his first solo effort in 13
years. He is promoting it with an 18-city
concert tour — his
first live shows with
his own band ever —
and makes a stop at
the Detroit Opera
House 8 p.m.

Donald Fagen
the effects of 9-11 and
the death of his moth-
er, in 2003, after a long
bout with Alzheimer's disease. The album is
dedicated to her. The liner notes read: "In
memory of Elinor Rosenberg Fagen, aka
Ellen Ross."
"Ellen Ross was her stage name Fagen
told the New York Times. "She was a profes-
sional singer from the age of 5 years to 15.
She was the Shirley Temple of the Catskills.

Waldman, a graduate of the University of
Michigan, has turned it into what may be
the world's first religious, scholarly comic
book.

woven throughout the panels, Waldman also
includes particulars from the Midrash, the
Jewish oral tradition that interprets and
expands biblical stories, and occasional
sidebar stories or observations from else-
where in Scripture or Jewish thought.
Waldman has designed his book so that
when readers come to the middle of it, they
have to flip it and continue reading it from
right to left, like Hebrew. The book, which
took seven years to complete, was conceived
in upstate New York, researched and trans-
lated in Jerusalem, illustrated in Barcelona
and put together in Philadelphia, Waldman's
hometown. I
