Bar
daughter has
been diagnosed
with Polycystic
Ovary Syn-
drome She struggles with many
issues as a result of this. Can you
shed some light on this subject
and tell us if seeing a dietitian can
work well with all the medicines
she is now taking Fran.

A

nswer Dear Fran, Poly-
cystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS) usually begins in a
young woman around puberty and
exacerbates with age. Cysts form
due to excess androgens (male hor-
mones), which causes a hormone
imbalance contributing to many
female problems. Your daughter's
gynecologist can explain the medi-
cal situation and has probably be-
gun treatment, possibly with
Glucophage (metformin), if
she is insulin resistant.

Rabbi Adler Remembered 32

Many young woman af-
flicted with PCOS struggle
with weight gain, insulin
resistance, and other
side effects, including
increased risk for dia-
betes, hypertension, and
i obesity later in life.

Memories linger on 40th anniversary
of Shaarey Zedek leader's death.

Nutritional counseling
early on can help control
the weight issue. The medica-
tions may work better with proper
eating/nutrition. A planned diet
should improve her outlook and
can help keep glucose levels in
appropriate ranges. I recommend a
team approach utilizing her physi-
cian, dietitian, therapist, and an
exercise physiologist.
