Help Fight Cancer
• ince 2004, Kicks for the Cure
has raised almost $18,000 in
the fight against cancer. Now,
the third annual benefit for the
Detroit-based Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute returns
to Powerhouse Gym in West
Bloomfield on Sunday, March 5,8-11
a.m.
About 100 people are expected to
lace up their boxing gloves and kick-
boxing shoes to raise money for can-
cer research. The class is designed to
introduce the public to kickboxing
and healthy eating habits proven to
help prevent cancer.
High-energy techno music sets the
tone for the exercise portion of the
class taught by Omar Akl, who fuses
boxing, kickboxing, self-defense, and
aerobics for an intense cardio work-
out. Akl, of Omar's Planet and
www.omarsplanet.com , is a
Powerhouse instructor and mar-
tial arts-boxing champion.
Dr. Laura Freedman of
Karmanos will be on hand to talk
about the importance of mam-
mograms and early detection.
Kristin Landis, a Ph.D. candidate
of cancer biology at Karmanos,
will talk about nutrition to pre-
vent cancer.
Spinning instructor Mike Knight
will donate the money from two
spinning classes- that day, one at 7:15
a.m. and the other at 11:15 a.m. to
the fund-raiser. Spinners will
donate $20 to participate in each of
those classes.
Akl conceived of the fund-raiser
in honor of his best friend who lost
his fight with leukemia at age 18.
"Kicks for the Cure lets you take an
active role in the fight, teaches you
that you are not alone — and that by
working together, you really do have
a fighting chance to beat cancer," he
said.
Powerhouse Gym will host an
open house, allowing the public full
use of the gym for the day.
Donations are encouraged, but not
required for anyone wishing to use
the facility. H
Tickets to the main event are avail-
able for donations of $50, $100
and $250. Available at
Powerhouse Gym, 6750 Orchard
Lake Road, ( 248) 539-3370,
or call Omar's Planet,
(248) 894-1345.
