Mossad," Feb. 16, page 51).
Reverand said it was "eerie" that the
Ivlossad agent, who was involved in
killing terrorists involved in the 1972
Munich Olympics massacre, said,"We
operated according to instructions. It
was enough to be told that they were
killing Israelis. In a unit like ours, you
don't ask questions."
Reverand commented: "We were only
following orders — hearing that from
an Israeli operative is no small measure
of irony" —referring, as your reporter
noted, "to the defense repeatedly cited
by Nazi soldiers?'
While it is true that Adolf Eichmann
made notorious the phrase "only follow-
ing orders',' that does not mean anyone
who ever follows orders is somehow
comparable to the Nazis. The "following,
orders" defense used by some war crim-
inals is rejected by reasonable people
because of the assumption that a person
should be able to distinguish between
moral orders and immoral orders —
and should not follow the latter.
But that is not applicable to the case
of this Mossad agent, because there is no
basis for a comparison between Nazis
involved in the mass murder of innocent
civilians and Israeli agents striking at
mass murderers. To compare the two
trivializes the Holocaust and under-
mines efforts to educate the public
about the real nature of Hitler, Nazi
Germany and the mass murder of six
million European Jews.
unequipped to make the important
decisions concerning my future that one
has make at college. Now, at Michigan
State University, I am majoring in inter-
national relations with a focus on
Middle Eastern studies. Going on Nativ
enhanced my life in more ways than I
can articulate. While initially tentative to
spend a year in Israel, I now cannot
imagine my life without that year of fas-
cinating experiences and self-discovery.
I wholeheartedly plan on strengthening
my connection to the land of Israel
when I return there for my junior year.

A Souper Sunday
On behalf of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek, I would like to thank the Jewish
News for co-sponsoring "Souper Bowl
Sunday" ("Souper Bowl Sunday," Feb. 9,
page 28).
Your excellent coverage of this event
will hopefully help the plight of so many
in our community. There are 1,300
homeless people in Oakland County
alone and many more living below the
poverty line. They are in need of food,
clothing and job opportunities. We all
must be involved in searching for ways
to assist these individuals. We applaud
the IN for helping to make a difference.

I want to lend my support to Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit Rabbi
Lee Buckman's call for more college-age
students to spend an extended period of
time in Israel ("A New Communal
Norm," Feb. 23, page 36). Between my
senior year in high school and my first
year in college, I went on a program
called Nativ.
Nativ is a 10-month-long program,
run by United Synagogue Youth, which
focuses on studies, community living,
traveling, volunteering and leadership
training while simultaneously embrac-
ing a Conservative Jewish lifestyle.
Unlike a short-term visit to Israel where
one can only begin to scratch the sur-
face of what Israel is really about, an
extended trip allows one to become
entirely immersed in Israeli culture and
experience the land as a participating
member, rather than just a tourist.
I decided to go on Nativ because I felt
