Henry Ford leads
the way with
ovative -treatments

Meet one of the faces of success

Benjamin Movsas, M.D., chairman
of the Radiation Oncology
Department for Henry Ford Health
System, and a member of the
Henry Ford Medical Group, talks
about developments in his .fleld.

Henry Ford's Radiation
Department is a leader in offering
patients technological advances.
One innovative cancer treatment,
called stereotactic body radiation,
delivers highly precise radiation to
a tumor. Focused radiation treat-
ments have been used for more
than a decade on brain tumors, but
applying this strategy to cancer
sites outside the brain is more
challenging, and requires a great
deal of experience.

Over the last few years, Henry Ford
has pioneered stereotactic body
radiation by combining imaging
and robotics to treat localized
tumors of the spine, lung, pan-
creas, liver and head and neck. The
physician has to take breathing
into account when providing a pre-
cise dosage of radiation.

Such focused treatment means the
radiation can be completed in as
few as one to four precision treat-
ments instead of the traditional six
to seven weeks of daily clinic visits.
Treatment is more convenient and
better tolerated by the patient.
This non-invasive, outpatient
procedure is painless and patients
typically return to normal activities
that day. We have treated more
than 250 patients with spinal or
bone tumors with this technology,
and more than 200 patients with
other tumors.

We've recently assembled a unique
Spine Tumor Board, a multidisci-
plinary effort with doctors in vari-
ous specialties. This panel meets
to recommend the best treatment
for each patient. Physicians from
across the country come to Henry
Ford to learn from our experts,
including a group from the
Cleveland Clinic. Patients have
come from around the globe to
receive this specialized treatment.

There are always limits to how
much radiation can be delivered

safely. How can
radiation oncol-
ogists make the
same amount
more effective?

To achieve this,
Henry Ford has
been developing
a novel strategy
utilizing gene
therapy in
prostate and
other cancers. Treatment is deliv-
ered by a common cold virus, which
attacks the cancer cells and leaves
the normal cells undamaged. Our
studies have shown that this strate-
gy is well tolerated by patients, with
improved tumor responses. We will
soon be expanding this treatment to
additional sites, such as pancreatic
cancer.

My passion is to improve survival
rates of cancer patients, while
maintaining or improving their
quality of life. I'm proud to be the
chair of the Quality of Life
Committee for the national
Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.
Recently, Henry Ford has been
selected to help this group develop
a national trial using stereotactic
radiation for spine tumors.

What excites me is our ability in
the near future to combine these
targeted radiation treatments with
gene therapy. Henry Ford is one of
the few institutions in the country
poised to integrate these strategies.
I believe this will become a new
standard for treating cancer
patients in the future.

This is why I came to Henry Ford,
to be part of this unique opportuni-
ty to combine the best, leading-
edge technological approaches with
novel biological strategies, to
improve the outcome and quality of
life for our patients.

My wife Tammy, a neuro-ophthal-
mologist, also is a Henry Ford
physician and sees patients at the
Henry Ford Medical Center-West
Bloomfield. Our family belongs to
two synagogues — Young Israel in
Oak Park and Shomrey Emunah in
Southfield.
