recorded on her first album for Verve-
Folkways in 1965, which also featured
her first hit,"Society's Child."
That song ignited controversy from
coast to coast, resulting in the burning
of a radio station, the firing of disc
jockeys who
played it, and a
generation
happy to have a
female song-
writer to stand
beside Bob
Dylan.
"It was good
to start young,"
Janis Ian
says Ian. "It was
good to learn,
early on, that what matters is the
music. I got most of my big mistakes
over with before I was 21."
Ian's reviewers have called her live
performances "overwhelming to the
spirit and soul." Her talent extends to
her short stories and, her songs for film
and television. She also runs a founda-
tion, named for her mother, Pearl, that
supplies college scholarships in perpe-
tuity.
2006 sees the release of Ian's 20th
major-label album. Titled Folk Is the
New Black, it encompasses politics,
self-critique and a great breakup song,
"All the Promises."
Janis Ian performs 7:30 p.m. Sunday,
March 5, at the Ark in Ann Arbor. $23.

Schneider is deservedly Razzie-

much money, so the world will
probably be spared a third install-

and find an intelligent comedy to

great political power in the last five
years. Understanding their vision and
their leadership is important to dealing
