New YorkIJTA — A play in New York
about the death of a pro-Palestinian
demonstrator at the hands of an
Israeli bulldozer was delayed. James
Nicola, the artistic director of the New
York Theater workshop, said he decid-
ed to delay the March 22 opening of
My Name is Rachel Corrie, because of
concerns from the local Jewish com-
munity. Corrie was accidentally run
over and killed by an Israeli bulldozer
as it tried to uncover arms tunnels in
the Gaza Strip in 2003.
Once A Denier ...
Vienna/JTA — Convicted Holocaust
denier David Irving reiterated that
Hitler did not have a systematic plan
to exterminate Europe's Jews.
Speaking from his jail cell in
Austria, Irving told the BBC, "Adolf
Hitler's own involvement" in the
Holocaust "has a big question mark
behind it" Irving also said he now
believes some Jews were gassed dur-
ing World War II, but he does not
believe that many people were gassed
at Auschwitz, where he contends there
were only two small gas chambers.
Irving was recently given a 3-year
sentence for a 1989 speech and inter-
view he gave in Austria in which he
denied that there were gas chambers
at Auschwitz. Irving's lawyers and
prosecutors have both appealed the
sentence.

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's population is
believed to have passed the 7 million
mark. Ma'ariv reported Tuesday that
the population now stands at around
7.1 million, based on extrapolating
from its size at the end of 2005 —
6.99 million — and an annual
growth rate of 1.7 percent.
According to the government's
Central Bureau of Statistics, 76 percent
of Israelis are Jewish, 20 percent are
Arabs and the remainder are natural-
ized foreign workers or immigrants
not considered Jewish by Jewish law
Israel's population is projected to pass
10 million in 2024.
Washington/JTA — The Jewish
Council for Public Affairs voted to
monitor guidelines for religious tol-
erance at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The umbrella organization for
Jewish community relations councils
and national organizations said
Monday it would closely track the
implementation of the Air Force's
interim guidelines to ensure that
they safeguard against proselytizing
and improper sectarian prayer.
The JCPA also voted Monday at its
annual meeting to support reform of
the Gulf Coast after Hurricane
Katrina and to form a task force to
address genocide in the Sudan.
The JCPA also reiterated its 2005
pledge to raise awareness about gov-
ernment-sponsored massacres in
Darfur, Sudan, and urged the United
States and the international commu-
nity not to assist a Palestinian
Authority that is run by the Hamas.
Israel Boycott?
Jerusalem/JTA — The Dubai firm
seeking to take over some operations
at U.S. ports reportedly enforces a
boycott against Israel. The Jerusalem
Post reported Tuesday that Dubai
Ports World examines "certificates of
origin" to make sure that products
entering Dubai do not originate in
Israel.
The Post reported that the U.S.
Office of Anti-Boycott Compliance
fined at least three companies last
year for complying with boycott-
related requests received from the
Dubai government, which runs
Dubai Ports World. Conclusion of the
deal, which had been approved by
the Bush administration, has been
postponed amid controversy related
to security concerns of an Arab-
owned company operating part of
the ports.
Sharon Turns 78
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's ailing Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon turned 78. A
select group of relatives and confi-
dants gathered around Sharon's bed-
side at Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital
in Ein Kerem on Sunday for a quiet
birthday celebration. Sharon has been
in a coma since his Jan. 4 stroke.
Revocation Upheld
New York/JTA — A U.S. appeals
court upheld a ruling revoking the
citizenship of a man for his World
War II-era activities. The opinion
issued late last week by the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit
affirms the A/lay 2005 decision
against Josias Kumpf, 81, who has
admitted to serving at the
Sachsenhausen and Trawniki camps
during the war. At Trawniki, Kumpf
stood guard as mass murders were
committed. E
