Says project producer Steven Epstein:
"The Silk Road Project exemplifies
through artistic means a vision of the
much sought-after unity among diverse
cultures."
A prime component of the Silk Road
Project is the Silk Road Ensemble, whose
combinations of musicians are dedicated
to exploring the relationship between tra-
dition and innovation in music from the
East and West. Their concerts often inter-
mingle Western and non-Western classi-
cal, folk and popular music.
Performing 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at
Orchestra Hall in the Max M. Fisher Music
Center in Detroit, the Silk Road Ensemble,
led by Yo-Yo Ma, will feature performers
on traditional Western instruments, such
as violinist Jeffrey Gandelsman, and oth-
ers on instruments from the Middle East
and Far East.
Tickets are $24-$74. (313) 576-5111 or

Steely Dan Redux

Few groups-in the past 40 years have
been as admired as Steely Dan.
In the 1970s, the group put out
eight albums of tuneful jazz-pop with
intelligent lyrics. These albums
earned critical acclaim and a large
and devoted fan base.
