For all intents and pur-
poses, Steely Dan has always
been the composing-playing
duo of Donald Fagen (he's
Jewish) and Walter Becker
(he's not). Steely Dan dis-
banded in 1980 for 20 years.
In 1982, Fagen put out a
Donald
solo album that was a
smash success. However, he
suffered a writer's block and did
not record again until the mid-
1990s. His two solo CDs of that era
are today overshadowed by the
remarkable Steely Dan comeback
CDs of 2000 and 2003, which won

Fagen

Grammys and sold
big.
Becker and
Fagen toured
behind these CDs
to rapt audiences,
pausing long
enough to be
inducted in the
Rock and Roll Hall

of Fame.
Now, Fagen is going solo again
and touring in support of his new
CD, Morph the Cat. He will appear
at the Detroit Opera House on
Thursday, March 16. ❑
