Yes, Resist! from page 17

"I was lonely at home; there would be
days I wouldn't get dressed until late in
the afternoon. Then one day I realized
that I needed a change. That's why I
moved to The Park at Trowbridge...
and I got my life back! Many of my
friends lived here and I didn't even
know it, plus I've made so many
new friendships too. You'll never be
lonely because there are so many
things to do—musical entertainment,
art classes, trips—there's something for
everyone. I've never had it so good."

David Bergman demonstrates

another stretch.

Institute of Michigan (RIM) at
Franklin Athletic Club in -
Southfield, reviewed the Muscle
Invigorator briefly and saw its
potential. RIM uses stretchable
plastic bands as a tool for resist-
ance training with rehab patients.
"I like the idea of the bar for
gripping, but there are negatives
for people who have Parkinson's or
trouble with their hands — the
cord can unroll," she says of
Bergman's invention. "And if some-
one's balance is off, the extra foam
on the cord that you stand on
might be a little thick, but they
would be tine exercising from a
chair.
"But he's got something here. It's
a healthier person's kind of activity.
It's for fit seniors who are exercise
savvy. Resistance training is a big
thing to prevent bone loss. You
always want some resistance to
make the muscles kick in and acti-
vate as long as you know what
muscles you are targeting."
Bergman's system comes with an
instruction booklet featuring
homey photos of the tit inventor
using the Invigorator in various
positions. There's also a helpful
video.
"What motivates me is that I see
people who could've avoided being
in poor shape," says Bergman, who
is the father of Rabbi Aaron
Bergman of the Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit. "To me, feel-
ing naturally good is the best feel-
ing you can have. Pain prevents you
from doing regular things in life
without suffering. And I see so
many people suffering. You have to
have the discipline of saying I want
to feel good." E
