in movies. He died at 88 in 1987.
The studio is based on his credo:
"Some people seem to feel that good
dancers are born. But all the good
dancers I have known are taught or
trained."
Reschikova, also of Waterford,
explained the method: "It empha-
sizes feeling the music. We tell the
dancer to not be afraid to go with
the flow; be relaxed and enjoy the
movement; don't be too mechanical.
This method has been proven to
increase the student's enjoyment and
decreaie the time it takes to learn!'
The studio uses the national Fred
Astaire Dance Studio Trophy
System, which is a structured pro-
gram that allows students to
improve from bronze to silver to
gold status. "We find that people just
enjoy moving around; it's great exer-
cise,' Reschikova said. Mountain
boasts that he has lost 10 pounds
since opening the studio.

Biggest Challenge

"Our biggest challenge so far has
been convincing men to take les-
sons," said Mountain. "Women tell
us they have a difficult time getting
their husbands out of the house for
something like dance lessons.
"We offer a working women's
night out on the fourth Thursday of
the month. Now we just have to get
the working men out.
"We're surprised that many
teenage couples have come to us
wanting to learn the latest ballroom
techniques. They tell us they're
tired of all the rock 'n' roll gyrations
on the dance floor by young people
who don't seem to be dancing with
anyone in particular. They want to
learn to dance like a couple.
"I also had a call from a Boy
Scout leader who says he's bringing
in his entire troop for lessons."
Reschikova says her science back-
ground comes in handy during the
teaching procedure. "It helps me
explain things logically to men, many
who are technical people, like engi-
neers:' she said. "Once they under-
stand and learn the basic steps, they
go with the flow and have fun." II

American engagements have
included the White House, New York
City's Blue Note, Los Angeles' House of
Blues and the JCC in West Bloomfield,
where they starred at the Incredible
Israel Fest in 1995.
"We like to keep adding new instru-
ments," says Deshet, whose group per-
forms world music with a blending of
acoustic and electric sounds. "We like
to represent more regions and hope
we can help all kinds of people come
together!'
Deshet says the group stays together
because they remain close personally
and feel like one family. They share
the goals of performing good music,
maintaining open relationships and
avoiding too much attention to them-
selves as individuals.
They have called attention to mem-
bers of the audience who have stood
up to dance to the sounds on stage.
Concerts essentially are universal as
they do not change their programs for
secular or religious.audiences. Band
members want to demonstrate
respectful attitudes toward different
cultures as they consider themselves
ambassadors for Israel. In 1990, Esta
became the first Israeli band to visit
Bulgaria.
As Esta tours, it is part of Arts
Midwest, a program that brings inter-
national entertainers to urban and
rural students.
"We're very excited about this tour
because of the educational part:'
Deshet says. "We will be doing resi-
dencies in different places, and that
helps us present Israeli art to the rest .
of the world."
