While New Orleans suffered the greater loss of life and devas-

Katrina's winds and storm surge. The result is a coastline lit-

nswer: Dear Georgette,
First, it's very important
to understand what this
study did not look at — it did not
study the relative distribution of
the different kinds of fat consumed
(saturated vs. unsaturated vs. trans
fat) — it only studied the overall
levels of fat consumption.

Supporters of the Mediterra-
nean diet (low in saturated
fats like butter and high in
unsaturated fats like those
in olive oil and Omega-3
fish oils) believe that the
type of fat consumed
is more important than
the overall level of fat
consumed. Trans fat (dis-
\
1 cussed last week) found in
some margarines, spreads,
cooking oils, and baked and
fried goods, are also considered
less-healthy fats to be avoided.

Dr. Dean Ornish, the well-known
low-fat diet guru, has criticized
the study because (he claims) the
participants failed to sufficiently
reduce their fat intake .and eat
enough fruits and vegetables.

I recommend that you watch the
types of fat you consume, eat your
fruits and vegetables, and exercise
regularly for a healthier lifestyle.

Registered Dietitian
