David Shenk is a freelance maga- zinelvriter and author, while Jonathan Shenk is a filmmaker and cinematographer. Lincoln's Melancholy has gained the attention of history scholars and helped place the author on the Advisory Council of the Abraham Lincoln Bicenntenial Commission. (the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth falls on Feb. 12, 2009.) The author's work also made him a consultant on Time's Making of America series and the History Channel's film The Other Side of Abraham Lincoln. "I'm Jewish and very interested in Jewish traditions:' says the free- lancer, who is on the board of his synagogue, the Shul of New York. "I would love to find a story that would let me draw deeper into that. "My grandfather was a rabbi, and his memory is very dear to me.
