While it might seem to relate to her work with sil- ver, the married name came long before her current artistic focus. Geller-Metal, based.in New York, travels back and forth from Italy, where artisans make her designs by hand. While she will have samples of menorahs, seder plates and spice boxes, every item is made to order and can have engraving. "I try to combine the best of con- temporary design with ritual use, and I tend to avoid iconography," says Geller-Metal, now working on a Torah crown for a specific commis- sion."My idea is to make heirlooms that can be passed down to the next generation?' Geller-Metal learned about work- ing with silver by taking a class at the Jewish Museum. She had a bach- elor's degree in art from Queens College long before she earned a master's degree in industrial design from the Pratt Institute. "I've always done Judaica, but in different forms," the New Yorker says. "I started out with Hebrew cal- ligraphy, and I've done tallit and tefillin bags made with materials commonly used in men's suits." - Leah Sosewitz, an Illinois artist, also works with fabric, but she has developed a style similar to what she does with paper, which she can cut .....44, in special . ways for ketubah or book projects. Often her work on tallit and chuppahs are done with Marsha Kasanov ; another Illinois artist who will be at the fair. "I like intricate, lacy patterns done in layers:' says Sosewitz, who gradu- ated from the Art Institute of Chicago. "I paint the papers by hand, and I have used images of moun- tains and Stones." Although Sosewitz has never been at an art fair in Michigan, she has had clients in the area. They have seen samples of her work on her- - Web site, www.judaicartstudio.com . "What makes this fair truly unique is that only works with Judaic themes are offered:' Lipnik says. "I'm pleased that we have almost 200 volunteers helping with the fair and that many families are opening their homes to the Israeli artists?' 1(248)661-4050 1(800)525.0035 www.mypassover.com 1075400 The JudaiOa Art & Jewelry Fair runs Feb.11-13 at•the West Bloomfield JCC.
