I is been nearly 23 years since they
lost their son and brother, but the
pain persists. That's why mem-
bers of the Goldman family are filled
with mixed emotions when they stop
. in occasionally on Sundays at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield and watch games in the
Kenny Goldman Jr. NBA-WNBA
Basketball League.
Record numbers of teams (62) and
players (nearly 600) ages 5-14 are
participating in the league this win-
ter, topping the old marks of 55
teams and about 500 players last fall.
Competition began Jan. 22 and will
continue each Sunday and a few
weekday nights until division cham-
pionships are decided March 26. A
week's worth of playoff games will
start March 19. Teams in open and
house divisions are guaranteed eight
regular-season games and from one
to three playoff contests. They also
practice once a week.
"My brother Kenny loved all sports,
but he especially loved playing bas-
ketball," said Farmington Hills resi-
dent Arnie Goldman; 49. "He wasn't
very tall, but he was a good shooter."
Kenny Goldman died July 21,
1982 at age 13, one day after he was
injured in a car accident at 11 Mile
and Inkster. He and his father were
on their way home from a Detroit
Tigers game at Tiger Stadium.
The league was launched in fall
1984 thanks to the Goldman family's
endowment for the Kenny Goldman
Athletic Fund. Kenny Goldman never
played in a basketball league, but his
family was certain he would have
enjoyed it.
