Whose idea was this,
six years ago?
Dan: "The idea came from
[Greenberg members] Perry Teicher,
Max Shear and Gabe Craig. They
wanted to combine both community
service and an activity that teenage
guys enjoyed ... Greenberg and Berlin
met twice a month to casually shoot
_hoops at the Oak Park JCC."

What happened?
Dan: "The program fell apart just
one year later because of its location
[Greenberg has no Oak Park mem-
bers] and the lack of drivers within

the chapter. When I became. chapter
vice president in 2003, I sat down
with Jay Bassin, chapter adviser;
Peter Shear, chapter president; and
Perry Teicher, BBYO regional presi-
dent. We wrote down the positives
and the negatives, and I restructured
the program.
"The new location would be Akiva
Hebrew Day School in Southfield,
and we moved the program to
Tuesday nights with a lot of help
from Alissa Pianin of JARC and Jay
Bassin. The following year, when I
became chapter president, the pro-
gram went above and beyond any-
thing I had ever imagined. It became
something that people put over their
current obligations. The program
was clearly a success because both
the guys of Greenberg AZA and the
guys of the Berlin Home loved it.
"The program was so strong, we
started what is now an annual ice
cream social at the end of the season
at the Berlin Home, put together by
Alissa Pianin and paid for by JARC..
"Since moving to Akiva, we have
been able to expand to kickball,
