A member of the Henry Ford Medical Group, he performs gynecological surgeries at Henry Ford Hospital, Henry Ford Medical Center-West Bloomfield and Henry Ford Medical Center- Sterling Heights. Accepted into medical school from high school, Dr. Eisenstein participated in an advanced studies program through his years at the University of Michigan. His father, a well-known surgeon, was his role model for a career in medicine. "There have been many advances in the field of obstet- rics and gynecology," says Dr. Eisenstein. "I am fortunate to be associated with Henry Ford, a world leader in robotic laparo- scopic surgery. Part of my work involves the development of robotic surgery for gynecology. "Currently, my practice involves performing advanced surgical procedures, including laparoscopic supracervical hys- terectomies. In addition, I lead the multi-disciplinary clinic for chronic pelvic pain, and teach laparoscopic surgical skills to residents." Laparoscopic procedures are minimally invasive surgical methods, using small incisions, which usually result in less dis- comfort and faster recovery times for the patient. Gynecologists who perform these procedures have achieved a degree of specialization within their field.' Dr. Eisensteiri he still enjoys the special moments of deliver- ing babies. . "An obstetri- cian/gynecol- ogist has a close bond with a patient," he says. "When you're dealing with child- -bearing Dise issues, it can be very emotional. Settlements Cost Billions Jerusalem/JTA Settlements have cost Israelis more than $14 billion, not • counting military expenditures, an independent Israeli study said. The study, released by the Research Institute for Economic and Social Affairs, also said the government . spends twice as much on settlements as it does on local authorities inside Israel. The institute, funded by a German group that backs Israel-Arab dialogue, took 18 months to calculate the costs of four decades of settlement in areas claimed by the Palestinians. "I remember a patient who had had two miscarriages, after hav- ing had two children. We were able to determine that she had a particular antibody in her blood. After treatment, she was able to have a successful pregnancy and welcomed her third son." - His interest in health issues extends to his personal life. He has participated in numerous marathons. "In the past, I've run marathons to benefit lym- phoma and leukemia research," said Dr. Eisenstein. "In October, I ran in the Detroit Free Press Marathon in memo- ry of a friend from the study group at Temple Beth El." Professor Denies Holocaust Chicago/JTA The president of Northwestern University blasted one of his professors for denying the Holocaust. The president, Henry Bienen, said Monday that Arthur Butz's comments are a "contemptible insult to all decent and feeling people." Butz, an engineer- ing- professor, e-mailed comments denying the Holocaust to an Iranian news agency, backing remarks by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that denied the Holocaust. In com- ments that were also posted on his Web site, Butz called the Holocaust a "delib- erately contrived falsehood" and con- gratulated Ahmadinejad. The Hillel at Northwestern, which has a substantial Jewish population, published an advertisement protesting Butz's comments in the schoo's news- paper and called for a community meeting Tuesday night to address the Holocaust. - "This year, I want to raise funds for organizations in Israel help- ing individuals and families cope with the after effects of terrorist violence, both physical and psychological." Menachem Mazuz this week ordered the Interior Ministry to register Amir and his wife, Larissa .Trimbobler, as married, after more than a year of deliberations. Amir, who is serving a life sentence in isolation for assassinat- ing the prime minister in 1995, mar- ried Trimbobler by arranging for an intermediary to pass her a ring. Rabbis recognized the union, prompting Mazuz's ruling. Amir's lawyer said the decision could help get Amir conjugal rights. - Leading Feminist Dies Washington/JTA Betty Friedan, whose book The Feminine Mystique launched - the feminist revolution in the United States, died Saturday at 85. Friedan died of congestive heart fail- . ure in Washington. In her book; Friedan used her own experiences as a wife and mother to critique the role of women in U.S. society. In 1966, she helped found the National Organization for Women, which helped launch feminism. New Reform Social Action New York/JTA Reform Jews in the United States formed a new social action group. Just Congregations, established by the Union for Reform Judaism, intends to organize congregations to unite with religious groups of other faiths in order to address local social and economic needs, such as education, health care and living wages. Rabbi Jonah Pesner, whose Temple Israel in Boston is the model for this project, will create manuals for the con- gregations, and travel to synagogues to train individual congregations. The proj- ect is funded by the Nathan Cummings Foundation and individual donors, and Jewish Funds for Justice, which will also help run it. [11 -
