Ilan Knee has three strong
ties to Michigan right now
— two plays and a confer-
ence. Besides writing one play
recently performed in Detroit and
another play about to be performed
in suburban Detroit, he is planning
to be in the area next June as a par-
ticipant in a theater forum.
Knee, who developed the script
for the stage version of Little- Women
recently seen at the Fisher Theatre,
came up with the original script for
Syncopation, which will be produced
Feb. 8-March 5 at the Meadow Brook
Theatre in Rochester.
Syncopation, a two-character
romantic comedy set on New York's
Lower East Side, follows a middle-

Debuting in Michigan, it won an
American Critics Theatre Award
after premiering in 1999 at the Long
Wharf Theatre in Connecticut and
the George Street Playhouse in New
Jersey.
"This play captures so much
about the way I feel about life and
relationships," explains Knee, single
and living in New York. "The themes
of partnering and struggling to find
how to partner offer lots of twists
and turns and many other elements,
such as respect and hard work.
