JNPLATINUM

Apple desserts are the ultimate comfort desserts. And this one is so basic, the fla-
vor of the apples is the star — but don't let that stop you from adding dried fruits
to the filling or nuts to the topping, as you like. Double, triple, even quadruple the
recipe if you like your desserts to be very showy!

Filling:
12 cups peeled 1-inch apple chunks (golden
delicious and Granny smith are nice)
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Topping:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup oats, any variety or old-fashioned
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter or margarine,
cut into small pieces

Preheat oven to 350E Spray a 2 1/2- to 3-quart baking dish (not very shallow or
the topping won't cover the apples) with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a
large bowl, combine all the filling ingredients and toss well. Place in the prepared
baking dish. Set aside.

Place the topping ingredients in another bowl and, using your hands, mash
together the topping ingredients and sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour, until hot and bubbly with golden topping. Serve
warm, alone, or with fresh whipped cream or vanilla or cinnamon ice cream.
Makes 8-10 large servings.

SUPER BOWL CITY

Celebrate the Super Bowl, Detroit style.

By Lynne Konstantin

ince our fair city has been chosen as the site for the National Football League's Super Bowl for
the first time since 1982, Metro Detroit has undergone a $17 billion revitalization, with the major
coming-out party happening on Feb. 5. You, too, can get in on the celebration by hosting a Detroit-
themed Super Bowl party.

S

Huntington Woods resident Arlene Selik, along with husband Rick, is doing just that in honor of
their son Marc — who happens to work for the NFL Network in Los Angeles. "It's essentially welcom-
ing his office to Detroit the week before the Super Bowl," explains Arlene, but that doesn't mean you
can't borrow some of her Detroit-centric ideas for the big day. Among the more well-known stars of
her party are American Coney Island, Ray's Ice Cream covered with Sander's Hot Fudge, Better Made
products and Vernor's Ginger Ale, all locally made. In addition, like Selik, you can offer guests sliders,
possibly from Birmingham's Hunter House, and Michigan salads made with Michigan cherries.
Invite friends to bring their own specialties — "because this is the only place you can get them," she
says. "One friend makes a fabulous mandel brodt, another makes delicious brownies," she says.
Selik's contribution: her famous chocolate chip cookies. "They're the best."

To celebrate the Super Bowl Selik-style, here are a few more local products to include in your
festivities:
