Jews Remember King

New York/JTA — Jewish leaders
mourned the death of Coretta Scott
King, who died Tuesday, Jan. 31, at age
78.
King, the widow of Martin Luther
King Jr., "continued her husband's
legacy of strengthening black-Jewish
relations," said Rabbi Marc Schneier,
president of the Foundation for Ethnic
Understanding. She "fought for the
civil rights of Jews, and she supported
issues and concerns of the Jewish
community," particularly the State of
Israel.

New York/JTA — Steven Spielberg's
Munich was nominated for five Oscars,
including best picture.
Munich, which fictionally tells the
story of Israel's retribution for the
massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972
Olympic Games, also was nominated
Tuesday in the editing, adapted
screenplay and music categories, and
Spielberg was nominated as best
director.
Jake Gyllenhaal was nominated for

best supporting actor for his role in
Brokeback Mountain. In the best
screenplay category, Woody Allen was
nominated for Match Point and Noah
Baumbach was nominated for The
Squid and the Whale.
Two films of interest to the Jewish
community were nominated for best
foreign-language film: Paradise Now,
which focuses on two Palestinian sui-
cide bombers, and Sophie Scholl: The
Final Days, which depicts the only
woman at the core of the underground
German wartime resistance group
known as the White Rose.
Britain's Rachel Weisz, the daughter
of wartime Jewish refugees, received a
best supporting actress nomination
for her role in The Constant Gardener.
The Oscars will be given out March
5.

Spielberg Backs 'Munich'

Jerusalem/JTA — Steven Spielberg
lambasted members of the Jewish
community who came out against his
film Munich.
Speaking as part of a roundtable in
the latest Newsweek magazine,
Spielberg said criticism leveled at him
and screenwriter Tony Kushner over
the depiction of Israel's hunt for the
Palestinian masterminds of the 1972
Munich Olympics massacre is unfair.
Some American Jews, he said, "have
grown very angry at me for allowing
the Palestinians simply to have dia-
logue and for allowing Tony Kushner
to be the author of that dialogue.
Munich never once attacks Israel,
and barely criticizes Israel's policy of
counter violence against violence he
said. "It's the most questioning story
I've ever had the honor to tell. For that,
we were accused of the sin of moral
equivocation. Which, of course, we
didn't intend — and we're not guilty
of."
The controversy, Spielberg added,
"made me feel a little more aware of
the dogma, and the Luddite position
people take any time the Middle East
is up for discussion."

Kadima Unveils List

Jerusalem/JTA — Ariel Sharon is
absent from the Kadima Party candi-
date list for Israel's March 28 elections.
Despite proposals to place the coma-
tose prime minister on the roster as a
symbolic show of faith that he will
recover from his Jan. 4 stroke, Sharon
was not among the 50 candidates
named Tuesday by Kadima.
Israeli media reported that Kadima's
election jingle and posters will refer to
Sharon.
Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
tops the candidate list, followed by
Shimon Peres and Foreign Minister
Tzipi Livni.
Avi Dichter, a former Shin Bet chief,
is fifth, three places ahead of Defense
Minister Shaul Mofaz, suggesting that
Mofaz's key portfolio could move to
someone else if Kadima wins the elec-
tions.
