Pearl A Diamond
"Vols have a gem in Pearl," writes
Birmingham (Ala.) News sports columnist
Kevin Scarbinsky about new University of
Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce
Pearl. Tennessee's first sellout crowd in 15
years watched the Vols upset No. 2-ranked
and previously unbeaten Florida 80-76.
Pearl's pre-game speech became an
ESPN SportsCenter moment. He fired up
Tennessee fans waiting to enter Thompson-
Boling Arena by telling them, "This is your
team. I'm your coach. And we're going to
kick Florida's ..."
The win probably locked up Tennessee's
first trip to the NCAA tournament in five
years. Last season, Pearl guided Wisconsin-
Milwaukee to upsets of Alabama and
Boston College in the NCAA tourney.
Marquis Performer
Pitcher Jason Marquis received a $2.1 mil-
lion raise from the St. Louis Cardinals and
avoided salary arbitration. Marquis signed
a one-year, $5.5 million contract after going
13-14 with a 4.13 ERA last season for the
Cardinals while working a career-high 207
innings.
The Staten Island, N.Y., native is 42-36
with a 4.15 ERA in six major league sea-
sons with Atlanta and St. Louis. A career
.237 hitter, Marquis batted .310 in 2005.
In addition to his salary, Marquis could
earn an additional $275,000 in perform-
ance bonuses.
