eshivat Akiva students scored
a championship and other
high finishes in the
Southfield Public Library Fifth Grade
Battle of the Books on Jan. 19.
Akiva's Radical Readers — Joey
Jubas, Herschel Rogers, Alex Gross,
David Brystowski, Avi Katz — defeat-
ed 48 teams, the largest Battle to date.
The Friends of the Southfield Public
Library sponsors.the event, now in its
27th year.
Judy Jubas and Shoshana Katz co-
coached the team.
"This is something these boys
wanted to do:' Jubas said. "It is not
part of school. We met after school
and on Sundays to review the details
of the stories. This is in addition to
their regular homework, basketball
practices and other after-school activ-
ities."
Akiva's other boys team, Boys 'R Us,
coached by Susan Pollack, tied for sec-

ond. Team members were Akiva
Pollack, Aaron Wayne, Asher Teshuba,
Henry Albaum, Moshe Wayntraub and
Ariel Sosne.
The Amazing Readers, Beth Jacob's
girls' team coached by Jayne Cohen
and Lisa Parshan, came in third. On
the team were Shira Parshan, Batya
Cohen, Debbie Moskowitz, Chana
Faigie Kellman, Leah Lowenberg and
Kayla Mayerfeld.
The night before was the Fourth
Grade Battle and Akiva's teams placed
second and third out of 18 teams.
Taking second was Akiva Book Bros.

Korman, Ariel Solomon, Joseph
Wolfson and Roily Wolfe, coached by
Arye Zacks and Michal Korman.
Placing third was the Bookworms —
Elana Greenbaum, Erica Kellman,
Talia Schechet, Elie Kiipnik and Emily
Scherrer, coached by Jill and Joseph
Greenbaum.
