industry, George was often consulted
by friends with fashion dilemmas.
They opened their closet doors;
George would say what should stay
and what had to go.
From the closet, "it was inevitable
we would go through the jewelry
box," she says. One woman told
George, "Just take this stuff and see
what you can do."
What George did was make a charm
bracelet. Thus, a business was born.
George lingers for hours at flea mar-
kets and garage sales in search of sup-
plies. "By the time I come home," she

says, "I've got pain in my back, my
legs, my neck — and a whole lot of
goodies."
Every bit of each bracelet must be
top-notch, and usually that means vin-
tage. Even jump rings, the tiny circle
bits that link charm to bracelet, come
under scrutiny. "New jump rings don't
hold up, are the wro ng patina and as a
result are unuseable" George says. "So
I buy old chains and take them apart.
The devil's in the details."
Finds are housed in George's color-
coded Lucite boxes, or trays where
they are sorted according to theme:

MAKING A BRACELET IS "SORT OF LIKE BAKING A CAKE.
