Mr. Strauss

German composer Richard Strauss
(1864-1949) is the last in a line of
German Romantic composers. He was
no relation to the famous Viennese
Strauss family headed by Johann.
There is much controversy sur-
rounding Strauss' role in Germany
after the Nazi Party came to power. In
1933, without consulting him,
Goebbels appointed Strauss to head
the State Music Bureau. In 1935,
Strauss was forced to resign the posi-•
tion after refusing to remove from the
playbill for Die schweigsame Frau the
name of the Jewish librettist; his friend
Stefan Zweig. He had written Zweig a
supportive letter, insulting to the Nazis,
which was intercepted by the Gestapo.
But Strauss did befriend some high-
ranking Nazis — probably to protect
his Jewish daughter-in-law, Alice, from
persecution. When she was placed
under house arrest in 1938, Strauss
used his connections in Berlin to secure
her safety. In 1942, Strauss moved with
his family to Vienna, where he had a
high-ranking friend in power. But in
early 1944, while Strauss was away, Alice

This year,
Cojocaru, wearing thrift-store
dandy/low-rent clown clothes, made
catty, silly, stupid jokes on the red
carpet. These jokes were so flat that
most celebs just replied, "Are you
kidding?"
Mizrahi was witty and elegantly
dressed, but went into bizarr° land
when he asked actresses whether
they were wearing underwear and

poser's son
were abducted
by the Gestapo
and impris-
oned for two
nights. Only
Strauss' per-

vention was

able to save
them; they
were placed under house arrest for the
rest of the war.

I don't think it serves the interest
of the gay community to be the des-
ignated court jesters of award
events. Could you imagine the
shocked xeaction if the media hired
some Chasids from New York's
Diamond District to be the sole jew-
elry commentators, and they went
up and down the red- arpet saying
things like, "Oy, what a rock!" or
"You paid too much!"
