Why the Pediatric Dentist?

Many parents are
unaware of the existence
of Pediatric Dentists,
although they are very
familiar with the medical
equivalent of pediatri-
cians. Like the pediatri-
cian, a pediatric dentist
has extensive training in
treating the oral health
needs of the young
patient. In fact, pediatric
dentistry is an age-
defined dental specialty
that provides both pri-
mary and comprehensive
preventive and therapeu-
tic oral health care for
infants and children
through adolescence, .
including those with spe-
cial health care needs: To
become a pediatric den-

tal specialist, a
dentist must
complete a two
to three year
advanced educa-
tion program
accredited by the
American Dental
Association (ADA). The
curriculum of pediatric
dental programs include
issues and disciplines
such as behavior guid-
ance, care of the med-
ically and developmental-
ly compromised patient,
supervision of orofacial
growth and development,
cavity prevention, seda-
tion, pharmacologic
management and hospital
dentistry as well as other
traditional fields of den-
tistry.
Unfortunately, many
parents become aware of
the pediatric dentist only
after a child has had a
poor dental experience,
a traumatic episode, or
is referred by another

health professional.
There is also a myth that
pediatric dentists charge
more for a service or use
"specialized" instruments
and equipment. Many .
pediatric dental fees are
lovVer or similar to that of
a family dentist and the
use of instruments are
similar. It is the way in
which the child is treated
which makes the differ-
ence.
.The American Academy
of Pediatric Dentistry and
the American Dental
Association recommends
that a child visit a dentist
six months following the
eruption of the first tooth.
By evaluating children
early at this age, the den-
tist may educate the par-
ents on eruption patterns,
proper oral hygiene tech-
niques, dietary consider-
ations, and prepare the
family for a lifetime of
good oral habits and
smiles!

ou've decided to lose that "winter
wtight," prefer to do it at home, but
don't know how?
Take some advice from the experts: •
Cheap isn't necessarily inexpensive, and
make sure you enjoy doing what you buy.
If you ask Danny Sherbin which equip-
ment to purchase at his Exercise
Warehouse stores in Livonia and Troy,
instead of an immediate answer you'll
hear a series of questions: •
•What kind of space do you have?
• What are you trying to achieve?
•What kinds of activity do you enjoy?
Sherbin, and his partner in the Troy
store, Jeff Janower, emphasize that any
exercise equipment must be comfortable
for the user. With treadmills, they say,
every one is different.
"You have to check the impact absorp-
tion — some people like spongy, some
like firmer:' said Sherbin, who has been in
the business 10 years. Other points to
ponder: Are the controls easy to use, are
the railings or handle bars comfortable
and can you see the TV over them, is the
motor the right type and large enough, is
the treadmill belt wide enough or long
enough, and how does it feel under your
feet?
Will you be walking or running on the
treadmill? How much do you weigh?
According to Janower, the answers to those
last two questions alone could be the dif-

ference between a $1,000 treadmill and a
$4,600 model.
•
And, while treadmills remain highly
popular, other equipment is taking physi-
cal fitness market share. Ellipticals are
great, said Sherbin, for cross-training and
because you don't pound on your joints
when using them. Exercise bikes are pop-
ular — both sit-up and recumbent -
and Sherbin said multi-station weight-
training gyms are family friendly because
they are easy to adjust. The gyms require
8x8 feet of usable space.
Other opions: free weights and steppers.
No matter what you decide on, Sherbin
and Janower strongly recommend trying
out the equipment before you buy."Test it
out. Get on it for five or 10 minutes. Come
in and do a whole workout to see how it
feels:' said Sherbin. It is not unusual to
find customers in their gym clothes work-
ing out on the floor models at Exercise
Warehouse.
Sherbin emphasizes that quality equip-
ment comes with a quality warranty. "And
the dealer should service it. If he doesn't,
you need to find out who does" and if
their terms of service work for you.
Sherbin and Janower said less-expen-
sive equipment is readily available at "big
box" stores and area sporting good stores.
But limited selection, warranties, set-up
and service and lighter-duty models may
not fit your needs.
"There's also a certain comfort level
when you know you're dealing with the
owner:' Janower said. "Especially with big-
ticket items!'
