t just 21, Scarlett Johansson is
polishing her leading lady chops.
The beautiful young actress gets
to play an empty-headed but dangerous
sex bomb in Woody Allen's new drama
Match Point.
She's Nola Rice, a skittish, out-of-work
American actress, living in London, who
has a passionate affair with an ambitious
Irish tennis pro, Chris Wilton, played by
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who happens to
be engaged to Chloe (Emily Mortimer),
sister of Nola's fiance (Matthew Goode.)
So how does Scarlet enjoy playing, well
— a "scarlet woman"?
"I was attracted to Nola's desperation:'
she says,"although a lot of people said,
'Oh, she's this confident girl and then she
suddenly turns into this neurotic person."
But that's misleading, Scarlett believes.
"She's really confident throughout, and
then she's very strong-willed and knows
what she wants. She makes her decision to
keep her child (conceived with Chris), and
that's when it all unravels."
What makes Nola so angry, says
Scarlett, is that she believes her lover is a
liar. "It's his empty promises that drive her
to desperate kind of measures, like going
to his house and wanting to confront his
wife because she's going crazy over it. To
me it felt real. I felt everything she did was
very reasonable and within the confines of
what people would do under those cir-

cumstances:'
Scarlett says before landing the meaty
role, she was a huge Woody Allen fan —
probably long before I was supposed to
be watching his movies." It also meant she
was very nervous when she went to work
for the director — particularly as she was
a last-minute choice for the role.
' "I don't know if I was intimidated, but I
was really cast a week before shooting
started. When I arrived in London, we did
these camera tests, which were horrible
and long. Woody was just sort of standing
behind the camera. Then they started
coming out with all of these outfits, which
is like my worst nightmare.
"The next day we shot a complicated
scene where my character had to explain
her entire story to Jonathan's character.
You don't expect that you're going to have
five pages of dialogue."
In fact because she was so edgy, she
says, "My first takes were horrible. Then I
realized that I better suck it up. because I
had seven weeks of it:'
Now that the movie is out, Scarlett says
she's annoyed that though Match Point
doesn't have any nudity or rough lan-
guage, it has been given an R-rating.
"I don't understand ratings at all; in
fact, I don't think movies should be rated.
I think its silly. I never pay attention to
them. My parents never paid attention to
them, and I turned out all right.
"I don't know what they mean when
they say a film has adult content:' she con-
