Fight Night

A Jewish presence highlights boxing
event at Detroit's Fisher Building.

.

Robin Schwartz
Special to the Jewish News

D

avid Farbman, 34, of
Bloomfield Hills is a self-pro-
claimed boxing junkie. He
won't be in the ring; but his name will
headline one of the biggest boxing
nights the city of Detroit has seen in
years.
"If you really look at what Detroit
was original-
ly founded
upon, it's
cars, enter-
tainment,
music and
boxing;'
Farbman
said.
The CEO
of the
Farbman
Group, a
Southfield-
based full-
service real
estate com-
pany, will serve as master of
ceremonies for "Fight Night at
the Fisher" on Thursday, Feb. 2,
along with WJLB-FM radio DJ _
MC Serch, who also is Jewish.
The charity event takes place
three days before Detroit hosts
Super Bowl XL.
Professional and amateur
boxers will duke it out in a ring
set up in the ornate main lobby
of the Fisher building. There
will also be dinner, drinks and
a silent auction. Organizers
hope to raise at least $100,000
to save Detroit's legendary
Kronk Gym, which is in financial
trouble.
"This is a safe-haven for kids not
even just from Detroit:' Farbman said.
"Macomb County, Oakland County —
for kids who are in trouble, this is
where they go and it's a place of hope."
Boxing trainer Emanuel Steward,
who has trained such champions as
Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis and .
Evander Holyfield, organized the
event. He started coaching in the

Kronk's boxing program in 1971 and
has vowed to raise the money to keep
the building open. Other big-name
fighters like Mike Tyson, George
Foreman and Muhammad Ali have
been invited to attend.
Farbman believes the event may be .
the shot in the arm the city needs to
bring big-time boxing events back to
Detroit.
"A lot of people in thelewish com-
munity have been stepping up and
buying tickets for this event:'
said Farbman. "The hope is
not only to save the original
Kronk gym, but to build them
a new Kronk gym and create
something special." Li
