It wasn't long before they called Gittleman. "Twelve years ago we added a great room, a bedroom and a master bath," recalled Linda. Then, two children were still at home. Now, the family dog Murphy,, three cats and frequently visiting • grandchildren enjoy the original improvements as - well as those just done—a whole new kitchen and powder room—by Gittleman, of course. • "The first job was such a great experience," said Linda, "it went like clockwork." When it came time to renovate again, the Curry's hoped history would repeat itself and it did. "Scott came up with a great design," said Linda, now delighted to be cooking in her new, gorgeous granite.kitchen with maple cabinets, a center island and a new powder, room nearby. "We are very pleased," she said. In fact, ALYN sent an ambulance to pick it up. Nine-year- old Rebecca Fogel, who has cerebral palsy, outgrew the wheelchair; and As I looked at the wheelchair, I wondered who would be its next user. What would his or her story be? her parents, Cathy and Dr. Andrew Fogel, decided to donate it to ALYN. Rebecca and her twin brother, David, plan to be in Israel for their bat and bar mitzvahs. As I looked at the wheelchair, I won- dered who would be its next user. What would his or her story be? How would the wheelchair enable that child to enrich his or her life? For the Fogels, it was about helping another person in need. Thrdughout ALYN, coexistence exists at its most basic level. In the neonatal intensive care area or the hydrotherapy pool, there is a definite and obvious mixing of Israelis and Palestinians, Jews and Muslims, unit- ed by the needs of their children. Walls, fences, tunnels and roadblocks are intended to separate. You go your way, and we'll go ours. Magic Michael the Clown, Naomi Gefen, the Fogels and ALYN remind us that despite the fears, the tensions and distrust, there are opportunities for our humanity toward others to be illu- minated. It's what keeps a civil society civil during turbulent times. El Arthur M.
