Promoting Dance Lubovitch, lArhose time is devoted almost exclusively to his profes- sion, stays in condition by dancing every day in his studio, working out at a gym before rehearsals and eating a high-protein diet. He teaches dance appreciation to teens. "Taking art out of the schools has reached a crisis level," he says. "When I was in public school, the arts were very much a part of our lives and education for good rea- son. Art teaches about values and what creates a life of meaning. "I've become involved with groups that expose young people to the arts outside of any school curriculum. I personally escort groups to dance concerts and then we have discussions. Participants are chosen by their schools based on their interests and academic profiles. These are all kids from lower economic backgrounds who are college bound but have not been exposed to the arts." Over the years, Lubovitch has taken note of audience interest. "There's a far greater public for dance than ever before, and I think that dance is a very American expression," he says. "Dance gives bodies freedom, and the very act of dance is a demo- cratic behavior because the space that dancers share has to be shared with equality and equa- nimity. The spirit of dancing, its energy and the vastness of it seem to speak to the American image." ❑ The Jose Limon Dance Company performs Jan. 13-15 at the Power Center, Fletcher at E. Huron, Ann Arbor.
