Celebrity Jews from page 48 Ali As Oxide Reports say that Brit Jewish comedian Sascha Baron Cohen (aka Ali G) has been cast as Chasidic rocker Curly Oxide in an upcoming film, Curly Oxide and Vic Thrill, directed by Tina Fey of Saturday Night Live fame. The movie is based on the real- life tale (first told on NPR's This American Life) of a young Chasidic guy named Chaim who meets up with a griz- Sascha Baron zled rocker Cohen as All G named Vic Thrill in a bar and for two years becomes a star on the New York underground punk rock circuit — until he is forced to make a choice between being a Chasid or a rocker (he chooses Chasid). MLK Celebration Rock musician Rick Recht, a star on the Jewish music circuit, has joined with the Anti-Defamation League in a multifaceted campaign against bigotry titled "Tear Down the Walls." The campaign includes a Tear Down the Walls album featuring music by Recht, as well as contribu- tions from members of other faiths, including the famous Stax Academy of Music soul singers out of Memphis. The cam- paign includes the Rick Recht celebration, on. Jan. 16, of Martin Luther King's birthday at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. This year the museum will mount a scripted concert combining music and spoken word by civil and human rights activists. Musical performers include Recht and choirs representing the Jewish, African-American, Christian and other communities. She co-stars as Dr. Lisa Cuddy. Recently, the actress related a story about her own medical emergency 0 , while visiting Israel in 1982. She was struck with a mysteri- ous stomach ailment while on a Jewish teen tour and was taken to the nearest medical facility — run by Israeli Arabs. The doctors there had no idea what was wrong with her and start- ed talking about major surgery. Edelstein wisely demanded another opinion and was transported to Emek Medical Center in Afula, where she received good treatment. Lisa shared her room with wounded soldiers who were returning from fighting in Lebanon. Emek staff were pleasantly sur- prised when they saw the teenager they had treated playing a doctor on House, which has just begun airing in Israel. No doubt, her other Israeli fans include many of Edeistein's own Israeli relatives, some of whom helped found Kibbutz Dalia, near Haifa. — 71 Live Entertainment Fridays & Saturdays 248.588.6000 313.832.1616 1477 John R at Maple • Troy 4222 Second St. • Detroit MARIOSDETROIT.COM Join us for a CHINESE NEW YEAR BANQUET Sunday, Jan. 29th 4:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m.-5:45 p.m.: • Get your picture taken in Chinese New Year Costume • Chinese name given to you as gift 5:45 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.: • Dragon Dance 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.: • 10-Course Dinner r 33 00 per person 555 AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE PARTIES :71/43 CIrchard i akc: Rd. 1 L2:--irmiritzl,m T Days A \\'c-1<.
