ORT Consolidates
Won't Hear Case
New York/JTA — Women's American
ORT and American ORT are consolidat-
ing operations. The consolidated group
will better support World ORT's training
and educational operations worldwide.
The new operations will be under the
direction of Hope Kessler, who has
served as executive director of Women's
American ORT.
Washington/JTA — The U.S. Supreme
Court denied a petition from the
American Jewish Congress to review a
decision allowing Americorps teachers to
teach religion in religious schools.
The court did not act on the organiza-
tion's petition Monday, essentially deny-
ing them a Supreme Court review, after a
federal appeals court ruled last year on
behalf of the Corporation for National
Service, which oversees Americorps,
because the government was not using
the money to promote religion.
AJCongress said the payment of
$4,725 in financial aid to teachers in reli-
gious schools violates the separation of
church and state.
Sharon Moves
Jerusalem/JTA — Ariel Sharon's condi-
tion improved on Tuesday, a day after he
moved his right side. The Israeli prime
minister showed movement on his left
side for the first time since his Jan. 4
stroke, according to Israeli media.
The damage to Sharon's brain is
believed to be concentrated in the right
side of his brain, which controls the left
side of the body But doctors at
Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital at Ein
Kerem, where Sharon is being treated,
cautioned that Sharon remains in critical
condition, and that it could be several
days before they could assess the damage
caused by his stroke.
Negligence Disputed
Jerusalem/JTA — Ariel Sharon's brain
hemorrhage reportedly was the result of
a blood disorder that doctors failed to
detect in time. Quoting medical sources
familiar with the Israeli prime minister's
stroke, Ha'aretz reported Tuesday that it
likely was brought on by anticoagulants
administered in ignorance of the fact
that Sharon had cerebral amyloid
angiopathy, an infection of blood vessels
in the brain.
According to the newspaper, the treat-
ment, combined with the disorder, may
have precipitated the hemorrhage Sharon
suffered last week. Ha'aretz said doctors
should have detected the CPA when the
prime minister was admitted with a mild
stroke in December.
Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director-gener-
al of the Hadassah Medical Organization,
rejected the report, saying,"Everything
we know today about P.M. Sharon's con-
dition we diagnosed when he was admit-
ted to the hospital the first time with a
mild stroke!'
Sharon's Family
New York/JTA — Hadassah's national
president visited with members of Ariel
Sharon's family. "They're saddened,
they're afraid and they're coping," said
June Walker, president of the women's
Zionist organization.
"It's a very close family. I spoke with
his son Omri, who thanked Hadassah for
the care and the caring that Hadassah is
giving his father!'

Soccer Rumble
Jerusalem/JTA — A Jewish-Arab soccer
game in Israel turned violent.
At least 10 fans were injured Sunday
during a fight that followed a match
between Betar Jerusalem and the pre-
dominantly Arab soccer team Bnei
Sakhnin. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.
There is a history of bad blood
between the teams. Members of Betar
Jerusalem, which is identified with the
Israeli right wing, are known to harass
and even attack rival fans, especially
Arabs. But two residents of the Galilee
venue, Sakhnin, were arrested on suspi-
cion of provoking the confrontation after
the game.
Urges Immigration
Jerusalem/JTA — The Jewish Agency for
Israel opened a center in Jerusalem
aimed at encouraging aliyah to the
Jewish state.
The Global Center for Israel, which
opened Sunday, will provide information
ranging from employment possibilities
to how to buy an apartment, the
Jerusalem Post reported. The center will
have an around-the-clock call center
staffed by bilingual professionals. ❑

Answering
Israel's Critics
The Charge:
Israel's intransigence, and not a lack of
democracy in the Middle East, is the
cause of conflict in the region.
The Answer:
International human rights organiza-
tions annually report that, in most of
the Arab world, there is no democracy,
political reform, tolerance toward
minorities or celebration of diversity.
There is one commonality — a united
opposition to Israel as the Jewish state.
