Birthright event went on as
planned.
Izagine the energy generated
by 3,000 young adults, pumped
up by their Israel visit and the
first-rate entertainment that
greeted them when they entered
the hall. It felt like a rock con-
cert.
As I sat watching the gyrating
and pulsating taking place all
around me, I remembered sit-
ting in almost the identical seat
in 1979 to hear legendary tenor
Luciano Pavarotti perform with
the Israel Philharmonic in a
more sedate environment.
Charles Bronfman, who along
with Jewish Renaissance Media
Chairman Michael Steinhardt,
was one of the founders of
Birthright Israel, was overcome
with emotion as he spoke to the
suddenly silent young adults
about the latest Sharon Medical
report. Then, with the flick of a
few buttons, the house lights
dimmed and there was Ariel
Sharon, bigger than life on the
huge screen, with a massive
smile on his face, addressing a
full house during a recent
Birthright event, admonishing
the young adults to embrace
their Judaism, Israel and to
make alivah.
And then, just like that, the
mood changed. It was all right
to laugh, to smile, to cheer and
to celebrate again. There was
Singing and dancing in the
aisles. The place was electric.
The moods, the sorrows, the
joys of this country were on
contradictory display this day. A
country on the verge of national
mourning. A country not accus-
tomed to waiting for a traffic
light, let alone a seismic change
of government and politics. In
the midst of uncertainty, a
country still able to go about its
business and for some, to find
time to seize the moment and
celebrate life.
And yes, that was Wolf Blitzer
checking into the King David.
Fortunately, they haven't given
him my room yet.
