I feel good that they also enjoy
giving back something to the com-
munity.

Who makes up the
Schmaltz Klezmer Band
audience?

In 2001, we began playing for
parties at our temple, but we now
play throughout the Jewish com-
munity. We particularly enjoy
playing for the senior citizens at
Fleischman Residence and
Hechtman Apartments since many
of the residents enjoy hearing the
songs and music of their child-
hoods. We also enjoy playing for
bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings
and other simchahs.

What has drawn you to
being in a band over the
years, from the march-
ing band at Detroit
Mumford High to a rock
band afterward to the
klezmer group now?

Have you found special
hurdles raising a family
of adopted children?

We don't think of our children
as adopted. They are simply our
children. We think that our family
is cohesive as all the children are
supportive of one another. Of
course, we have challenges, but we
meet those with the help of our
extended family, our friends and
our faith.

How have you assured
all the children a Jewish
upbringing?

My wife provides us with a
Jewish home. The children have all
been raised in the Jewish faith. We
all took part in the Family
Education program and are very
active at Congregation Shir
Tikvah. Our granddaughter Aliyah
is in the first grade there and loves
attending services with us.
