e leads the Schmaltz Klezmer
Band and blows the shofar at
Congregation Shir Tikvah in
Troy, is the father of five children adopt-
ed through Lutheran Family Services
and Jewish Family Service, and has beat
back ulcerative colitis since 1967.
Rick May evokes a special twinkle
when talking about the All Star Camp
he has run each summer since 1993 in
the Madison Heights Lamphere School
District for young adults age 16 and up
with special needs or developmental
disabilities. The Detroit Opera Theatre .
now supports the day program, which
allows the 60 campers to learn, rehearse
and ultimately perform an opera.
A Detroit native, May will retire in
April after 36 years as a teacher — in
the Detroit Public Schools for six years

and since then with Lamphere, most of
the time in special education. May, 61,
and his wife of 40 years, Joyce, are par-
ents to Kenneth, 38, Scott, 37, Amanda,
23, Tana, 20, and Andrew 18. He likes to
tinker with bicycle parts and has been
known to give used bikes to kids who
don't have one.

What keeps you motivated
to run the All Star Camp?
The program has given me a great
deal of personal satisfaction because
it allows me to provide quality activ-

ities for this special population. I
especially enjoy watching the
campers have fun and reach new
goals each summer. Several of my
children have worked with me at the
camp, as volunteers and employees.
