gregations in those places as well as in
Los Angeles.
While he has written scholarly
books, this is his first book intended
for a general audience.
His rigorous approach and repre-
sentation of kabbalistic concepts is
closer to the work of academics than
to popular or self-help books — but
he adds psychological applications
and practical advice.
Rabbi 'Weiss is interested in the
human spiritual genome: the nature,
structure and history of the human
soul and the impact of spiritual ener-
gies, both dark and light, on ways of
perceiving the world. Through his
counseling work, he has come to see
that "the ancient truths of the
Kabbalah were the bridge I had been
seeking between psychology and the
quest for spiritual meaning?'
In Connecting to God, he shares 28
stories of individuals, couples and
families who, under his guidance,
used kabbalistic exercises along with
contemporary psychological strategies
to "liberate themselves from their self-
defeating ways of being?' Many readers
may see aspects of their own life sto-
ries in these retellings.
And Rabbi Weiss is very candid in
telling his own story of a childhood in
South Africa, his early experience of
meditating — he began on his own, as
a teenager — as well as his career
path, and some early losses and tough
times that have loomed over his devel-
opment.
As he says, healing proceeds when
"you're not afraid of the dark secrets,
when you can claim the shadows as
well as the light?"
Divine Energy
In accessible language, Rabbi Weiss
describes the 10 sefirot, or divine ema-
nations — including wisdom, under-
standing, love and empathy — as
building blocks and transformers of
divine energy. He also includes practi-
cal techniques that individuals can try
on their own, like re-examining their
life scripts, in search of wholeness and
balance. The guided meditations he
shares are also available on a separate
CD.
Rabbi Weiss relates his teachings to
the themes of Yom Kippur. "Teshuvah
means return. If all of our problems
are because a system of divine energy

within us is out of balance — we're
born with this system of divine energy
within us in harmony and balance; as
children, we have a sense of wonder
and connecting with God is very natu-
ral — then teshuvah is essentially a
return to this equilibrium.
"It's returning to your pristine, spir-
itual state, reclaiming a connection
which has been severed by distrac-
tions, pains, guilt, all kinds of things.
"It's [returning to a state of] divine
harmony, to be at home with one's self,
to forgive one's self before other peo-
ple, a return to one's childlike connec-
tion with God, on a more sophisticated
adult level.
"Each imbalance affects us and the
people around us and the cosmos.
Teshuvah is a return to balance, a
return to a situation where we can give
love and receive it',' Rabbi Weiss says.
Rabbi Weiss now leads Westwood
Village Synagogue, a small Orthodox
community centered around the cam-
pus of the University of California, Los
Angeles. There, he finds the opportu-
nity he desired of having ongoing
interactions with a small group of
people.
"An ancient God made this choice,"
he says of his pulpit. Rabbi Weiss had
retired from the rabbinate to work full
time in clinical practice, then gave
some lectures 'that led to this book,
joined the small shul and sat in the
back.
"And a year later, I'm its rabbi:'11.
