Jazz pianist Bill Charlap's
musical roots on display
at Orchestra Hall concert.
1062820
azz pianist and bandleader Bill
Charlap doesn't wait until the last
minute to plan a concert. The
time frame is more like the last 30 min-
utes.
Charlap, about to make his headline
debut at Orchestra Hall as part of the
Standard Federal Paradise Jazz Series, per-
forms standards by a variety of American
composers — from the Broadway show
tunes of the Gershwins to the club hits of
Horace Silver. He will be joined Friday
evening, Jan. 6, by bassist Peter
Washington and drummer Kenny
Washington, who round out the trio that
has completed six albums, including
2004's Grammy-nominated Somewhere:
Songs of Leonard Bernstein.
"We have so much music that what we
perform depends on what we feel like
doing at the time, and this keeps us fresh,"
says Charlap, 39."Our audience will hear
some tunes they know well and some tunes
they may not know so well. We'll make sure
each of us has space to be featured.
"We'll probably be culling from what is
essentially our trio book and some of the
things we haven't recorded. We're probably
not going to play things in the same key
right next to each other, and we're not
going to play things in the same tempo.
We want to have an arc that's like a good
Broadway show, and it all should have
some drama?"
Family Ties
Charlap's family background gave drama
to his musical outlook. He learned about
music and met many stage icons through
his parents, the late composer Morris
"Moose" Charlap and singer Sandy
Stewart.
His father wrote the scores for Peter
Pan, The Conquering Hero, Alice Through
the Looking
Glass and
