John De Hoog and the sculptures of
Richard Washington. "The drawings
capture three of my interests — gar-
dening, antique furniture and antique
toys. I did them last spring and summer
at my place in Saugatuck.
"In Chelsea, I will be showing 18-20
paintings. The cityscapes tend to cap-
ture memories of my Brooklyn child-
hood, and I show the Hebrew lettering
that was seen on the small stores. I like
the shapes and forms of Hebrew words,
which are not as distracting as words in
English might have been."
Avedon, who has been a professor for
30 years, attended the Rochester
Institute of Technology, where he taught
before going on to Eastern. His projects
have been shown in hundreds of juried
exhibits throughout the country and at
the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Art
Center of Battle Creek. Black, white and
gray drawings of Holocaust scenes have
toured area universities.
"I compare drawings to short stories
and paintings to novels," explains
Avedon, who unsuccessfully tried to
find a direct family link to the late pho-
tographer Richard Avedon. "Projects
done in pencils are very direct and com-
pleted quickly. Paintings can involve
processes that go on for months."
