Education can be just as lethal as a loaded firearm. Camps such as Dar al Islam in New Mexico appear, on the out- side, to be an excellent idea; but after reading your article "Tainted Teachings" (Oct 27, page 42), a red flag must be put on this organization immediately. I would not have an issue if private monies were supporting this religious enclave. However, when grants from the U.S. government are being awarded, then I feel that I must say I wish my taxes to be used in a different manner than tar- geting children to be indoctrinated into a cause that may-be hostile to my per- sonal beliefs. I have come to the understanding that our educational community at times can be much too radical with thinking that is targeted toward subversive attitudes that are meant to deflect any observant criti- cism while blinding any who wish to be argumentative toward their conclusions. Our universities have the responsibili- ty to open the door of intelligent dia- logue from groups that disagree more than agree on social topics that affect us all, but when balance of these alternative groups becoine too one-sided, as taxpay- ers we must demand accountability and bring balanced teaching back into the classroom. Our universities, if allowed to continue their religious prejudices toward one group over another, will undermine any and all moral and ethical safeguards that were placed into action to prevent such one-sided favoritism of one spiritual practice over another. Ron Austin Franklin A Nice Touch We would like to thank the Walled Lake Downtown Development Authority for including a Chanukah corner in its annual Seasbn To Remember, which was held Dec. 11 at the historic Stonecrest Building. It was fun to see children decorate Chanukah cookies and playing with dreidels. Thank you so much.
