than the opportunity to participate,"
explained Kuhn, a junior at the
University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor. "The voice of the future needs
to be heard.
"Giving the youth the opportunity
to work with those they have learned
from and looked up to, guarantees
that the next generation of leaders
will carry on in their footsteps," she
said. "Allowing the veterans to work
with the youth on their slates will
help the veterans realize changing
patterns in international Zionism,
specifically in youth groups and on
college campuses, and help them to
shape the future better."
For Dorfman, now studying law at
Rutgers University in New Jersey, it
is about involving independent
Jewish voices.
"I believe that truly independent
Jewish organizations . can connect to
certain unaffiliated Jews who are not
attracted to traditional methods of
outreach," he said. "As the World
Zionist Congress increasingly
becomes partisan and beholden to
narrow special interests, there is an
even greater need for a strong inde-
pendent group that has no affiliation
with any of the religious or political
parties in the Knesset. As the only
truly national and independent
party, Dor Zion represents the indi-
vidual Zionist at the World Zionist
Organization, securing a strong
voice for ALL Jews in America and
Israel."
Jerome S. Kaufman's motivation is
to encourage American Jews and
Israelis to support ZOA's political
perspective. Recalling an AZM meet-
ing in New York he attended a few
years ago, he says he was "appalled
at how far to the left the representa-
tives were."
"If given a chance to speak, I will
present a strong nationalistic point
of view and speak against the con-
tinuing land give-away and misguid-
ed policies of Ariel Sharon," the Oslo
Accords, and "all the attempts at
Israeli pacification of the Arabs that

Gated disaster," he said.
But Salinger says such issues "are
not where we can have the greatest
impact." While the progressive
Zionist has as deep an interest as
Kaufman in such issues, the Israeli
Knesset controls foreign policy inde-
pendent of the quasi-public WZO
and Jewish Agency.
For Salinger, the two top issues are
religious pluralism and support for
minorities and the underprivileged
in Israeli society.
"There is a lot of politicking; more
than I expected," Salinger said of his
experience in 1997. "It was incredi-
ble to participate in something with
so many people dedicated to the
concept of Zionism and support of
the State of Israel."
