Congregation Shir Tikvah won a
Congregation of Learners Award at
the Union for Reform Judaism's
biennial convention in Houston.
The congregation will receive
$150 worth of books and merchan-
dise relating to adult Jewish learn-
ing from the URJ Press. Its pro-
grams have been included in
Building Congregations of Learners:
Best Practices in Adult Study 2005, a
guide that may be downloaded at
www.urj.org/educate/adults.
Established in 2003, the Congre-
gation of Learners Award recog-
nizes the synagogues that provide
an atmosphere of exceptional var-
ied and comprehensive adult learn-
ing opportunities. Applicants were
judged on effectiveness in fulfilling
adult Jewish learning goals and on
creativity, inclusiveness, Judaic con-
tent, educational method, replica-
bility and integration with the val-
ues and vision of the congregation.

Congregation Beth Shalom will
provide food and shelter for the
homeless clients of the South
Oakland Shelter Sunday, Jan. 8,
through Sunday, Jan. 15.
The congregation's Social Action
Committee, chaired by Mandy
Friedenberg, has asked for the help
and volunteer participation of all
members of the synagogue.
Volunteers Will be needed to
drive the guests to and from the
South Oakland Shelter Office in
Royal Oak in the morning and the
evening, to cook and serve break-
fast and dinner and make bagged
lunches for the guests from the
shelter, to chaperone in the late
evening and overnight, to set up
and clean up daily and to wash
laundry at the end of the week.
In addition to the volunteer par-
ticipation, financial help to defray
the. cost of this program will be
appreciated. To volunteer or con-

Tot Shabbat
Congregation Beth Ahm will hold
a special Friday night Tot Shabbat
service, Jan. 27, for children ages 2-
5 and their families. A fun, partici-
patory half-hour service will be fol-
lowed by a family dinner.
The service will showcase the
children, giving them the opportu-
nity to perform well-known
Shabbat tunes. The Samantha Erin
Rosen Nursery School will partici-
pate.
The service will begin at 6 p.m.,
followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Cost
of the dinner is $36 per family.

Read Hebrew
Congregation Beth Ahm will offer
free Hebrew reading crash courses
to all members of the Detroit
Jewish community. This series,
sponsored by the National Jewish
Outreach Program, includes two
levels.
The beginner class is geared
toward. those with no prior expo-
sure to Hebrew and will begin by
teaching letters. The intermediate
class is geared toward those who
have completed the beginner's level
course or who simply wish to
improve their Hebrew reading
skills. A familiarity with the Hebrew
alphabet is a prerequisite for the
intermediate course; the class is
designed to strengthen the partici-
pants' skills in reading the siddur
and enhance understanding of the
ideas and concepts behind the syn-
agogue service. •
The beginner course will meet
Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m.
beginning on Jan. 11. The interme ,
diate course will meet Tuesday
evenings 7:30- 9 p.m., beginning
Jan. 10. Both classes will run for six
weeks.
