explains. He contacted the author,
who loved the idea and was anxious
to serve as the show's host. Thus
began a journey that literally trav-
eled 10,000 earthbound miles and
figuratively back in time to the
Garden of Eden. (Feiler's latest book,
Where God Was Born: A Journey by
Land to the Roots of Religion,
$26.95, published in September
2005 by William
Morrow/HarperCollins, continues
his exploration of the roots of reli-
gion in the war-torn areas of Israel,
Iraq and Iran.)
Levin and crew shot more than
200 hours of film and traveled
through several war zones. There
was one serious automobile acci-
dent and numerous military check :
points. Getting to Mt. Ararat alone
required going through 10 Turkish
checkpoints and then transferring
the equipment from a Turkish to a
Kurdish truck.

Spiritual Experience

Levin, 52, grew up in Los Angeles in
a family he describes as somewhere
between Conservative-and Reform.
Working-on the show, he says, has
impacted him deeply. "I never
thought it would," he says. "I didn't
pick up this journey as a faith-based
person; I picked it up as a filmmak-
er.
"I thought it was a fascinating
challenge. We take people places
where they'd rarely if ever go. They
hear this Kurdistani talking about
Noah and a Turkish Muslim speak-
ing about Abraham. Jews and
Christians have read the Bible, and
may have associated the•stories with
myths. But now they have a place
where Abraham and Noah and
Moses actually walked.
."It affected me profoundly',' says
Levin. "I have become a much more
spiritual person. I feel there is a his-.
tory behind my faith. It makes me
proud — no, I've always been proud
— it makes me proud to be a Je\v
more than ever. This tradition and
these brave people actually lived. C1
